Designing for Little Hearts: A Digital SEL Revolution

In 2019, I joined Committee for Children as a core UX/UI designer to reimagine the Second Step® Elementary program—a pioneering digital curriculum fostering social-emotional learning (SEL) for elementary students. Tasked with transforming the traditionally textbook-based program into an inclusive digital experience, I collaborated with educators, researchers, and developers to create a visually engaging, research-backed platform.

My role spanned foundational design: establishing the visual language (illustrations, typography, and interactive patterns), crafting internal logos, and designing PDF resources and UI components—all tailored to young learners. The shift from static textbooks to dynamic screens wasn’t just aesthetic; it removed barriers for students who previously struggled to see materials, leveling the playing field in classrooms. The new platform featured vibrant interactives, a video library, and intuitive navigation, making SEL concepts accessible and engaging.

Beyond modernizing the curriculum, our work unlocked global opportunities—scoring partnerships with schools internationally and proving that thoughtful design can democratize learning. As one of the lead designers from inception, I’m proud to have shaped a tool that empowers millions of students nationwide, blending empathy with functionality to support their emotional and academic growth.
