Designing Connection: A Social Hub for Seattle's Muslims

The Challenge: Isolation in a New City
Moving to a new city can be exciting—but also lonely. For Muslims relocating to Seattle, the struggle to find a supportive social circle is real. While established residents have built their networks, newcomers often face the daunting task of forming friendships from scratch. Mosques and cultural associations provide spiritual and communal spaces, but there was a clear gap: a dedicated, low-pressure social platform where Muslims of all backgrounds could connect organically. How do we create a space that fosters genuine relationships while accommodating the diverse needs of transplants and long-time residents alike?

Testing the Idea: A Digital Gathering Space
The first step was simple but powerful—a Facebook group. If the demand was there, the community would show up. And they did. Exponentially. Within days, "Muslims of Seattle Socials (MOSS)" saw an overwhelming influx of members, not just from current Seattleites but also from those planning future moves. The rapid growth confirmed a critical need: Seattle’s Muslim community craved a space designed purely for social bonding, free from the formalities of traditional community structures. This wasn’t just a group—it was the beginning of a movement. The challenge then shifted from "Is this needed?" to "How do we cultivate meaningful connections in a digital-first space?"

The Solution: A Brand That Feels Like Home
With momentum on its side, MOSS needed an identity—one that resonated with its mission of unity and belonging. The logo drew inspiration from the Kaaba, Islam’s most sacred structure and a universal symbol of connection. Its geometric simplicity mirrors the group’s ethos: a foundational meeting point for all, regardless of background. Clean, modern, and deeply symbolic, the design reinforces the idea that MOSS isn’t just another social group—it’s a cornerstone for community in Seattle.Today, MOSS continues to grow, both online and through real-world events, proving that sometimes the simplest solutions—a welcoming digital space and a symbol of unity—can bridge even the widest gaps.
